When Can I Apply for Medicare?

If you’re turning 65 or approaching retirement, you might be wondering when you can apply for Medicare. As your trusted Insurance Agency, we are here to guide you through this important milestone! Generally, you can enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is a 7-month window that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after. This is the ideal time to sign up for Parts A and B to avoid late enrollment penalties.

There’s also the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7 each year, allowing you to join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Prescription Drug (Part D) plan. Beyond that, there are Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) that may be available due to specific life events like moving out of your plan’s service area or losing employer coverage. With all these options, navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone! Reach out today, and let’s find the best plan for your needs together.

Can I Change My Medicare Plan If It Doesn't Work For Me?

Absolutely! If your Medicare plan isn’t quite meeting your needs, you have opportunities to make changes. During the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7, you can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan or vice versa, change Medicare Advantage plans, or join, switch, or drop a Part D Prescription Drug Plan. The coverage you choose during AEP takes effect on January 1 of the following year.

But what if you need to make changes outside of AEP? You’re in luck! The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31) allows those already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan to switch plans or return to Original Medicare. Additionally, Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) may be available if you experience certain life events, such as moving, losing other insurance coverage, or qualifying for Medicaid. At Nick Brooke Insurance, we're here to help you navigate these periods and find a plan that truly works for you. Contact us today to discuss your options!
